Rehabilitation program of Sighnaghi



 

 

 

  

Government of Georgia enterprises rehabilitation Project of  Sighnaghi. The project aims to save and preserve urban and architectural view of this important historical town and to improve the wealth of the local population by means of encouraging tourism and other economical enterprises.

Sighnaghi is one of the most beautiful towns of Georgia. Its attraction is caused of its oldest architectural view and location. The town is situated on a mountainous area and overlooks  Alazani Valley widespread space and faces snowy tops of Caucasus Mounts.

The aim of the rehabilitation project is to save and preserve and repair the historical urban and architectural view of the town. It includes renewing the town view and rehabilitation of the infrastructure. These will be the base for developing tourism and assisting some economical enterprises by means of attracting investors.

After successful realization of the project the town will return its old beauty and attraction; as well as it will guarantee creating vacations and improving social level of the citizens.

Rehabilitation works will be lead in 2007 year and it will cover seven historical areas of Sighnaghi. It will contain the following streets: Baratashvili, Lolashvili, Evdoshvili, 9 April, Sarajishvili, Rustaveli, Kostava, Dadiani, Chavchavadze, Tamar Mepe, Gorgasali and Gratsi, Dodashvili and Aghmashenebeli squares.

  

The project itself contains not only saving and preservation of historical buildings, but it also concerns development of the town as an urban and architectural entity. So, rehabilitation project itself includes not only the reconditioning and rehabilitation of historical buildings, it also will help to adapt Soviet Union period buildings to the town historical urban view. Rehabilitation of underground and exterior infrastructure of the selected areas is included in the project, in order to preserve historical places from dampness and any kind of damage; meantime rehabilitation of the infrastructure (for example re-paving) will return the old view of the town and will result development of the town and will make it more attractive for the town guests.

Work schedule
Primary  works - December, 2006 - January 2007;
Project works - January 2007
Project realization (constructing works) - February-October 2007

The project is coordinated by Kakheti region local government (representative of the president         G. Natsvlishvili), Ministry of Culture, Monument Reservation and Sports of Georgia (Deputy of Minister N. Vacheishvili); Georgian Cultural Inheritance Reservation Fund (Director Mr. D. Ninide).
